Proffitt and Associates recognizes the enormous impact that the construction
industry has on our environment. In an effort to be responsible stewards of
the Earth, we strive to lessen our environmental footprint in our design work
and in our everyday lives. As early as 1970, Michael Proffitt partnered with
local builders to design passive solar housing to be constructed on the
outskirts of Frederick. From then until now, the firm has implemented
policies to preserve natural resources and care for our planet.
As members of the U.S. Green Building Council since 2006, we have successfully
certified two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects
and have others on the boards. Our on-staff LEED Accredited Professionals
provide in-depth knowledge of sustainable design and proven experience with
LEED certification. Even before LEED was developed, the firm completed an
innovative and sustainable adaptive re-use of a historic gothic dairy barn
in Dickerson, Maryland for Montgomery County. The project included composting
toilets, on-site greywater treatment, and translucent insulated fiberglass
In 2008, the firm decided to develop a company sustainability initiative.
We are taking steps every day to not only “talk the talk”, but actually
“walk the walk” of sustainability.
