Fields Road Elementary School Feasibility Study
Gaithersburg, Maryland
Construction Cost: $8,042,000 (Option 1 Estimated)
Completion Date: 2003 (Study)

This feasibility study examined options for additions and alterations to Fields Road Elementary School, an existing 47,140 square foot school constructed in 1973. This was performed as a two-fold study: in order to meet the immediate needs of the school in terms of additional space required and described below, as well as how the proposed fits in to the overall modernization of the school (the date of which has not yet been determined). The following list represents a summary of our scope of work for this project:

The scope of work for the initial feasibility included the following new spaces: 2 Kindergarten rooms at 1,300 SF each, 7 general classrooms at 900 SF each, an ESOL room that is an overall 900 SF classroom with a gypsum board wall dividing it in half, and approximately 500 SF for additional administration areas. The education specifications provided by MCPS were utilized to complete this study.
The current number of students at the school is 559. The ultimate capacity of the school is projected at 640 students. This projected 640-student capacity was used for our review of the existing facility including restroom toilet/lav counts, codes, etc.
Three options for the proposed additional space were analyzed for the short term, and then each analyzed as part of the Master Plan for the future modernization project. Detailed cost estimates were completed for the three short-term options only. In regards to the overall masterplan and modernization work for the future modernization, we provided square foot areas to be added to the building, demolition square foot areas, and square foot areas to be renovated
