Williamsport Elementary School was originally constructed
in 1959, with a small classroom addition in 1965.
The school had not received a major renovation
in its 41 year life. As a result, major issues
with the existing building included life safety,
energy efficiency, and Americans with Disabilities
Act compliance (although some efforts to provide
ADA accessibility had been made in recent years).
The existing building is brick with floor to ceiling
aluminum non-thermal windows in all classrooms
and along many corridors and support spaces. The
roof is flat with large skylights over classrooms.
This project, bid under budget including alternates
in July 2001, included a complete renovation of the facility.
All mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components were
replaced, as well as all window systems, and new interior
casework and finishes. Skylights remain an important
feature in classroom areas.
Three additions were constructed. The larger houses
the gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen, art and music rooms.
The gymnasium and cafeteria are separated by an operable
partition to allow for large assemblies. This wing is
supported by an independent HVAC system to allow for
evening and weekend community use without affecting the
overall energy efficiency of the school.
The second addition comprises the kindergarten wing,
housing three classrooms and a support area. An entrance
independent of the main entrance allows for student pickup
and drop off without disrupting the remainder of the
school. The third addition to the front of the school
expands the existing administrative area. housing a conference
room, health suite, offices and reception area. |
