Laurel Mill House was built by Horace Capron in the
early 1800s to house his mill workers. It is Laurel's
oldest existing home and is now a museum.
To
restore and preserve a house of this age, our research
was extensive and our construction drawings highly detailed.
We followed stringent historic preservation guidelines
throughout. For instance, any millwork in good condition
was repaired and reinstalled, and we represented any
removed partitions by floor color changes and by using
partial walls.
We
converted the existing rooms into exhibit, library,
archival, office, and conference rooms. To bring the
house to museum standards, we added handicapped accessibility
as well as a climate-controlled environment virtually
invisible to the museum visitor.
