To convert Frederick's three-story 1861 Victorian County
Courthouse to a new use as Frederick City Hall, we researched
the historic structure extensively, uncovering features
that we were able to incorporate into the overall design.
One
discovery was a stenciling in the building's original
elevator shaft. The stenciling became the basis of the
interior design, and its colors formed our color scheme.
The stenciling is replicated on the walls of the main
entrance hall.
Throughout
the structure, the existing vaulted ceilings and fireplaces
were repaired, and each room was restored to its original
state and furnishings. We excavated and underpinned
the existing crawl space to provide additional room
for offices, conference rooms, and the city's museum
of artifacts.
