Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center
Silver Spring, Maryland
Construction Cost: $3,791,000
Completion Date: September 2000

Located in an urban setting in Montgomery County on the outskirts of Washington, DC, this recreation center was designed to meet the needs of the diverse population in the area. The project site is within Rosemary Hills Community Park - an established park with a mature hardwood forest, much of which was required to be preserved by the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission. Thus, the new structure was situated in an area that disturbed as few trees as possible and did not encroach on any of the existing playfields.

After many community meetings hosted by the County and the architect, it was collectively decided that the building should be two stories and located in an area close to the entrance to the park to provide easy pedestrian as well as vehicular access. The two-story option created a smaller footprint, which avoided the problem of disturbing trees or playfields, as well as enabling the building to be "tucked" into the hillside. This location also permitted direct-grade access at the first floor main entrance as well as at-grade access from the second floor onto a patio/terrace with access to and view of the park's playfields.

The design is approximately 34,000 square feet and includes a Gymnasium, Game Room, Exercise Room, Restrooms and Lockers, Staff Room, Conference Room, Lobby, Control, Art Room with kilns, Social Hall, Lounge, and Kitchen. The spaces were designed for use by participants of all ages: youth and seniors alike.

The entrance serves as the primary means of entry and exit to manage control of the building. The Control Desk and staff are situated so that they have visibility of the entire first floor of the building. Second floor spaces can be monitored by staff when in use, with cameras strategically located throughout the interior and exterior of the building for additional monitoring from the main control desk. One of the nicest spaces in the building is the Social Hall located at the rear of the second floor overlooking the playfields and woods of Rosemary Hills Park. This room is highlighted by two sets of peaked storefront windows that tower over twenty feet in height. The view from these windows brings the park surroundings into the building and truly makes the building part of the park.

Finishes in the building were all selected based on performance and maintenance. Specialized materials included a rubberized Tuflex floor at the exercise room, a floating maple wood floor at the gymnasium, and a parquet maple wood flooring on a rubberized cushioned base at the second floor aerobics area. Porcelain pavers were selected for the main lobby, corridor and stair, while other finishes included ceramic tile restrooms, patterned vinyl tile flooring, carpet, and epoxy-painted CMU.

The exterior of the building takes into account that the community is primarily residential condominiums, and primarily red brick. The building enhances the surrounding settings and provides a welcoming entrance to entice its users to enter and discover the benefits it offers them.
