This project consisted of an Instructional Natatorium
addition to house a uniform depth teaching/geriatric
pool. This pool is completely handicapped accessible
and utilizes a heating/cooling/ dehumidifying system
to maintain a comfortable atmosphere and water temperature.
This system utilizes the rejected heat from the room
to heat the pool water and is extremely efficient.
The
pool itself maintains higher than average water temperatures
(88 to 89 degrees) because of its function as a teaching
pool for young children and the elderly. The filtering
system consists of high turnover sand filters with a
bromine disinfection system. Bromine was selected for
disinfection because of its ability to control bacteria
in higher water temperatures.
Daylight
through filtered kalwall panels and stainless steel
metal halide light fixtures maintain a bright cheery
atmosphere without creating "hot-spots" on the pool's
surface. Wood decking and laminated wood beams were
utilized for the roof structureto eliminate the possibility
of rusting if ferrous materials were used. Tying into
the existing structure prevented the use of concrete
decking and beams because of their weight.
