Built
in 1913 as an armory building in the City of Frederick,
this structure now houses the City of Frederick’s
Recreation Department. This project entailed an all-encompassing
renovation and rehabilitation of the existing armory
structure which has had little work completed on it
since its original construction. The project included
an overall replacement of the building’s heating
system with a new heating and cooling system in all
areas of the building, as well as the installation
of a new elevator and sprinkler system throughout.
General upgrades for code compliance, including the
addition of fire stairs and ADA restrooms, and removal
of existing asbestos and lead paint were also a part
of this construction project.
The main emphasis of the project, however, was the conversion
of the existing lower level of the building to a new
state-of-the-art fitness center with additional areas
for support, classroom space, and multi-purpose rooms.
This involved complete
Exterior cleaning and re-pointing of the existing facebrick
and pre-cast stone coping were also completed.
Because the building was occupied during construction,
this was a phased project. The gymnasium's dropped acoustical
ceiling was removed and the exposed trusses painted and
new insulation installed between painted purlins. Existing
under-window radiators were removed and new lighting
and HVAC systems were installed. |
