With over 4,000 adult members and nearly 7,000 active
members overall, a second floor addition to house the
Frederick County Family YMCA's new Wellness Center was
long overdue. When the initial first story was constructed
in 1989, the roof structure was designed for the maximum
future loading potential at 150 pounds per square foot,
with the anticipation that a second story would be added
at a later date.
Working
with several new codes and restrictions since 1989,
Proffitt & Associates designed a state-of-the-art Wellness/Fitness
Center with special semi-private areas for free weight
and cardiovascular workouts. A new computer system was
installed to interconnect the equipment so members and
staff can monitor personal progress. The free weight
area was finished with Tuflex rubber flooring to minimize
the impact of the weights on the floor and the fitness
area is carpeted for general acoustics and comfort.
The walls are primarily resilient epoxy painted CMU,
and the exposed steel building and track structures,
and exposed ductwork, are painted with bright colors
to create an exciting workout atmosphere.
One
of the primary features of the Wellness/Fitness Center
is the elevated running track. Design of the space was
such that it provides the maximum area for fitness workouts
on the second level, necessitating that the track be
located above the equipment. As required by current
ADA regulations, the track level is accessible by the
physically challenged by means of an elevator adjacent
to the track.
A
2,600 square foot addition to the east of the existing
locker rooms was constructed for women members and includes
amenities such as private showers, dressing rooms and
a sauna, as well as direct access through a wet corridor
to the existing swimming pool and whirlpool areas. The
roof structure of this addition was designed to handle
a future gymnasium-type occupancy at 150 pounds per
square foot.
We
have also had an ongoing relationship with the Frederick
County Family YMCA for over ten years, designing and
providing construction administration for five addition
and/or alteration projects totaling nearly 60,000 square
feet including:
á
Fitness Center, Locker Rooms, Office, Multi-Purpose
á Instructional Natatorium
á Elevator, Handicapped Accessibility, and Kindergarten
á Racquetball Courts and Group Whirlpool
á Youth Center and Childcare Center
á Conversion for Youth Lockers/Addition of Women's Lockers
á New Wellness/Fitness Center with elevated track
